Bien Donné Agri Cape Week 2012

Bien Donné Agri Cape Week 2012 boasting the theme “Change for sustainability”, starts on Thursday, 19 April and ends on Saturday, 21 April 2012.

The much celebrated and internationally acclaimed Bien Donné Agricultural Expo has a new face and is destined to take the fruit, vegetable and wine industries to unchartered territories.

This is result of a series of extremely successful and productive consultation processes between the Agricultural Research Council (ARC) and Agri Mega. Until recently, the latter was the proud host of the very successful Agri Cape Week Expo which was held annually at the Boland Agricultural High School outside Paarl, South Africa.

The initial driving forces behind the amalgamation are the respective industries that ensured the linkage between the ARC and Agri Mega. The desired outcome was effected which resulted in the new annual event, Bien Donné Agri Cape Week, to be hosted in Simondium, outside Franchhoek.

There is an element of great excitement – not only the commercial farmers and commodities, but particularly the newcomers to the industries.

Orton King, Executive Director of the Agri Mega Group, says, “Bien Donné Agri Cape Week maintains the historic nature and exceptional standard of the old Bien Donné Expo where it remains a showcase of the research of the ARC. The expo focuses on the total value‐chain pertaining to the primary and secondary agri‐industries.”

“The ARC appreciates the loyalty and support of previous Bien Donne Exhibitors and undertakes to create a favourable environment which would be conducive to their enterprises,” said Dr Shadrack Moephuli, President and CEO of the ARC.

“Bien Donné Agri Cape Week fundamentally highlights the roles of producers, employees, processors, and consumers. The expo enjoys the support of the government, agricultural‐ and commodity organisations, product‐ and service providers, as well as the various industry partners,” King added.

We, as the ARC regard the Bien Donné Agri Cape Week Expo as an important bridge between research, technology transfer and practical agriculture. The exhibitors, demonstrations and workshops will therefore take this into account.

It is important to demonstrate to the ARC’s clients and other role‐players in agriculture how research and development contribute to the success of their business, which kind of information and services are available and to provide a platform for the researchers behind these technology tools.

One can therefore regard this Expo as an important technology transfer vehicle. The relationship between the ARC and Agri Mega Group will emphasise and drive the contribution and role of the ARC in the agricultural sector. It should be noted that Bien Donné is one of the ARC’s Research Farms and that the bulk of research concerning the development of new deciduous fruit cultivars is conducted on this particular farm.

The organisers of Bien Donné Agri Cape Week 2012 view this opportunity as a special privilege to be at the helm of this historic event. They wish to assure the stakeholders, exhibitors and the visiting public that a prestigious event will be showcased.
